I was honored to present the current plans for the Open Table of Tabletop Role-Playing Games at the Japan Association for Language Teaching's PAN SIG Conference for 2023. Thank you to all those who attended my presentation.
Title: Using Gamebooks to Encourage Students' Second Language English Language Development
Abstract
In his portion of the forum, the presenter will discuss the process and materials he is using to encourage second language university students of English to read books aimed at young adult native-speaking readers. Gamebooks have motivated reluctant native-speaking readers, especially adolescent male readers, for the past 40 years. The presenter is currently using gamebooks as a bridge between the extensive reading program and the tabletop roleplaying game program he facilitates at a language learning support center at a large university in Tokyo. In addition to the gamebooks and the two programs, the presenter will describe the process and materials he developed to encourage the students to read the gamebooks and utilize the books' contents in both speaking and writing.
I presented at part of the forum of the Literature in Language Teaching Special Interest Group Forum which occurred on Sunday May 14th 14:05 - 15:35 at Kyoto Sangyo University in room S504 organized by the honorable John F. Maune of Hokusei Gakuen University Jr. College.
I was pleased to present alongside Camilo Villanueva of the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies; Shannon Miyamoto, a graduate student at Temple University Japan; Rebecca Clegg-Sasaki of Akita International University. The forum was entitled Looking forward: Literature in Language Teaching and contained a wide range of exciting ideas for using literature to improve Japanese students' English language ability. I look forward to our continuing conversation about using a wide range of literature with our students.
